MovingPictures.Gallery presents Performing Systems: Jonas Bers, a satellite of Creative Tech Week NYC. An audiovisual performance by Jonas Bers has yielded 10 digital media artworks, now offered as Singular Editions.
Performing Systems is a conceptual experiment in which artists improvise within the MovingPictures.Gallery platform to measure cultural value in a post-blockchain era.
Bers’ creation – a video and sound feed – was recorded, then excerpted; these unique media artworks were uploaded to a secure, permanent storage system and assigned a unique code – the “hash.”
The editioned works are exhibited, and available for purchase for the duration of May, 2016.
Performing Systems asserts a near-future ecosystem at the intersection of emerging technologies and societal attitudes. In this possible future, Digital Media Artists and their patrons can assert the value of their ethereal artworks.
Jonas Bers (b.1977, USA)
A stalwart of NY video performance and devotee of obsolete technology, Bers’ minimalist geometric abstractions use audiovisual stimulation as a context for the deep contemplation of shapes and patterns typically devoid of spiritual connotation in order to consider visual and emotional illusions of dimensionality.
In Bers’ realtime video sonification works, salvaged VHS era editing machines, surveillance cameras, and laboratory equipment undergo crude modifications to be reincarnated as performance instrumentation. Audible frequencies within the video signal are amplified into a stark and droning synesthetic score; an intuitive and hypnotic illustration of the inextricable relationship between analog video and sound.
Bers has performed and exhibited internationally — notably at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Seeing Sound UK, The Wrong New Digital Art Biennial, LaMama, Dixon Place, and The Seligmann Center for the Arts.
